SNP MSP for the Western Isles, Alasdair Allan, has welcomed the new Inshore Fishing (Prohibition of Fishing for Cockles)(Western Isles)(Scotland) Order which comes into effect today. The Scottish Government have now legislated for a statutory minimum size of 30mm for cockles which may be lifted from the foreshore of the Western Isles. Alasdair Allan commented: "I am extremely pleased that the Scottish Government has now implemented this Statutory Instrument, something which I made representation on in response to local concerns. The concern was that some people, mainly from outwith the Western Isles, were lifting cockles in a completely unsustainable way on the islands' beaches. "A few months ago I met with cockle fishermen in Harris who told me how anxious they were to protect the traditional local practice of leaving juvenile cockles in place to allow stocks to recover. "I am delighted now to see that the Scottish Government have taken on board their point. I believe that this order, coming into effect today, benefits both cockle fishermen and the environment alike." |
